February 2012

There seems to be a sudden surge in adverts for Great Danes crossed with other Breeds. Are people trying to make easy money? Is it a quest to create a new breed? Here are some of the Crossbreed Great Dane Puppies advertised on the internet this month:

Great Dane x Poodle
Great Dane x Husky
Great Dane x Boxer
Great Dane x Bull Mastiff
Great Dane x English Mastiff
Great Dane x Japanese Akita

Great Dane x Rhodesian Ridgeback
Great Dane x Dogue De Bordeaux
Great Dane x Malamute
Great Dane x Lurcher
Great Dane x Rottweiler
Great Dane x Dalmatian

Prices vary from £250 - £550 and upwards. Already Dane-a-doodles are being championed as “strong ,intelligent loving dogs with non / minimal shedding coats ideal for allergy sufferers”.
I think the Trades Description Act 1968 which was brought in to protect consumers should look into this one..........

November 2011

There were some interesting adverts offering some good bargains from a certain breeder in Derbyshire during November 2011. One was for a 17 month old black bitch who had already had a litter and this ‘self whelper’ was going for a mere £500....unregistered of course. But if you didn’t want her you could have a pregnant bitch who was also a ‘self whelper’ and unregistered from the same breeder. The price was a gift at £3,000 based on the bitch and 4 puppies. Well she had 13 puppies the first time round!!

December 2011

The same breeder in Derbyshire who was selling ‘self whelping’ bitches during November 2011 had more adverts in December. One was advertising a multi-coloured litter which included a MICRO DANE!!

He was small but very special and they wanted more money for him. (Most breeders would call that puppy the runt of the litter!) “BOTH parents were owned and loved.” Yet the advert began by saying the much loved dam had raided the pantry whilst they were out causing a ‘gastric tausion’ and had died.

The much loved sire was in the following advert for sale at £100. Apparently ‘he gets along great with all female dogs”.....well he would if he has been used at stud!

As cropping Great Danes’ ears was outlawed in the UK nearly a century ago what an opportunity to buy a cropped black Great Dane pup from an advertiser in Belfast. He states they won’t be cheap as they have already “started personal protection work.”

After complaints the advert was reinstated. Apparently the “pups are great with kids and other dogs” and will be imported from Slovenia in late January. You can be a proud owner for....£3,500! Wow! Another bargain!! What message does this say for our breed?

Then there were no end of Great Danes crossed with other breeds like Rottweilers, Bullmastiffs and English Mastiffs. Prices were greatly reduced across pure Great Danes and even Danes Crosses reflecting a sign of the times.

December 2011

Presuming ‘preloved’ is another name for second hand goods offered for sale it has its fair share of adverts trying to sell older Danes. One advert stating “Must go today £450 ono”! Another advert offering a 2 year old fawn bitch for sale at £500 “she loves to be outdoors and will happily live in a shed full of straw as she will a bed covered in duvets”.

There are various requests for Great Dane puppies and dogs from people who don’t have much to spend. They want them “as cheap as possible" but no ‘cross breeds’!

If you are looking for a stud dog who has already produced a couple of ‘healthy’ litters then look no further. George is a 4 year old Merle whose stud fee is a mere £300. From his photos he looks a handsome boy but for breeding he may not be a good choice!

One advert is asking for “Sacks/bags of dog food wanted opened or sealed” for a cheap price. This is apparently for two Great Dane puppies of which one was bought and was accompanied with a free one! Why have large breed dogs if you cannot afford to feed them?
